Why MeteoAM (Italy) issues more weather warnings than Météo-France

Meteo Aeronautica Militare (roughly translates to Weather by the Aeronautical Military) issues far more warnings than Météo-France. Here are the reasons why:

1. MeteoAM is phenomenon-based, not impact-based

Unlike Météo-France, MeteoAM is not impact-based. It is phenomenal-based, which means any type of weather (including thunderstorms) is possible somewhere in the region (e.g. Lazio), and MeteoAM would issue an immediate alert, even if it is sunny or if it is cloudy or normal rain. The most common warning types issued by MeteoAM are yellow and orange warnings, including thunderstorms, rain, and wind.

Météo-France is impact-based, especially for orange and red vigilance. Météo-France only issues yellow alerts when conditions are favorable, equivalent to a watch in the United States and Canada.

2. Italy produces far more severe weather events than what France does

Italy’s climate is far more severe than France, including the steeper terrain, especially in the Alps, and landslide flooding near the Po River. France gets these too, but not as severe as Italy’s

Heatwaves have been becoming far more hotter. Orani has reached 48.4 °C (119.1 °F) on July 19, 2026, which is one of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Europe, and is the hottest temperature ever recorded in all of Sardinia and the year 2026 in Europe.

France’s heatwaves are extreme too, but are a couple degrees cooler than Italy’s, because it is farther north. The heat thresholds are higher than Italy’s, because Météo-France is impact-based. The heatwave deaths for France are 14,458, which is far higher death count than Italy, which is 2,700 deaths, during the deadly 2026 European Heatwaves. This forced Météo-France to use impact-based warnings.
